You Can Expect...
….to
produce a 12 percentile test benefit (half a letter grade) for highly
anxious college and high school students, and a more modest 4–6
percentile benefit for middle school students., with a minimum of
staff resources.
The Problem
(Who's
Afraid of the Big Bad Test?)
High
test anxiety reduces working memory and impairs reasoning.
About
16–20% of students have high test anxiety, making it the most
prevalent handicap in our schools today.
Anxiety Control Training
- The
workshop presents an anxiety control program that speeds the process
and improves outcomes. The method uses stretch-tense sequences and
challenging imagery rather than simple relaxation.
- The
program substantially reduces anxiety in just one or two 30 minute
sessions. Participants will personally experience the anxiety
control training.
- Anxiety
Control interventions appear to provide stronger test gains than
familiar methods taking much longer. 12+ percentile gains (half a
letter grade) were obtained in two controlled college studies.
Who Should Attend
School
counselors, administrators, and professionals who work with anxious
students.
You Will Learn
… to
conduct a highly cost-effective program to reduce anxiety and improve
test scores that can treat whole classes of students with only a
handful of staff hours.
- School
counselors learn to screen students, explain the intervention, and
build confidence. The training CD presents the technical and
repetitious aspects of the intervention. Counselors are thus free
to focus on relationship concerns, while the CD provides the
services of a trained robot. The training CD is also reviewed at
home, reinforcing the benefits without further staff hours.
- School
administrators will see how the program is easy to administer and
provides a highly cost-effective way to improve school test
performance.
